Personal Training Business – What I Hate About It

Being a fitness trainer, and running your own personal training business is not the bed of roses many may think. Don’t get me wrong, fitness training can be very rewarding, and even profitable; but there are some important aspects you really must understand before starting a fitness business.

After more than 25 years in the personal trainer business I am sad to report there are 6 things I really dislike about the industry.

1. Lack of industry wide professionalism.

Let’s be honest, the personal training business industry is riddled with amateur hour. Far too many trainers call themselves pros, but really are a far cry from that. Consider the way some fitness trainers dress. An example would be muscle head attire. I don’t think this is very professional, do you?

This lack of professionalism erodes the perceived value of the entire industry driving down not only respect from the health care arena, and general public, but also de-valuing the fee we can charge. People just don’t take us seriously because of this lack of professionalism.

Limited regulation in the personal trainer industry provides the average Joe, or Jane workout warrior an opportunity to train clients for money. They don’t need a personal trainer education, certification, or even experience to start consulting. Un-qualified Trainers like these generally slip to the bottom of the barrel. However, their image pulls the qualified professional down.

In my opinion, being a professional fitness trainer means being sufficiently qualified, educated, with experience, dressed well, and respected inside the health care system.

If we want your personal training business to be taken seriously, and to command amazing fees, then being a qualified professional is a must. That means investing time in continuing personal trainer education throughout the span of your entire career.

2. Some trainers only are about the money.

This really gets on my nerves. If you want to be successful in the fitness business, then you must serve people. Serving people means caring about helping them, and not just taking their money. Trainers who are rep counters, and sweet talking sales people do not help propel our industry in the right direction.

3. Flakey, uncommitted clients.

Do you have clients who don’t show up by canceling all the time, and don’t put in the effort necessary to get real results? I’m sure you do! Isn’t it annoying? Well, you have a choice whether to work with them or not. It is alright to fire your D, and F clients. You know the ones where you put out all the energy, and don’t get much in return. Invest your energy on personal training business clients who really care by putting in the necessary effort to change.

Fitness training clients who cancel frequently, change your schedule weekly, arrive habitually late, and don’t put out effort should be fired!

4. Clients that don’t respect your time.

I’m sure you have come across clients that try to take advantage of you. When you give them more time, they seem to expect the favor all the time. They simply could care less about you, your time, and your fitness training business. When you give them an inch, they carelessly take a mile. You don’t need personal training business clients like this.

5. Solo 1 on 1 training – trading time for money.

If your fitness marketing plan calls for just one-on-one training, all by yourself, you are asking for trouble. Most fitness professionals trade time for money. That is effectively what 1 on 1 training really is.

These poor fitness trainers work themselves into burn-out just to make a living. As a matter of fact, I know some personal trainers who start at 4:30 am, and work until 6:30 pm. You are probably thinking they have a huge personal trainer income. The truth is no because they are not working the entire 14 hours. They have a client come in one hour, then off for the next hour, only to gear up for a client later on.

Yes, you can make a living trading time for money, but it surely isn’t the most effective way.

I recommend fitness professionals serious about success to invest continuing education time in marketing, and sales. The most successful fitness pros all master these two components.

6. Clients that don’t pay on time.

Have you ever had a slow playing, or no paying client? When that happens the fitness business in no fun. Are you running a personal training business, or a bill collector firm? Most fitness pros are running around wasting time collecting payments, and not training clients. This is the wrong idea!

Personal trainers start a personal training business because they are passionate about fitness, want to help people, and also enjoy the freedom of working for themselves. These are all great reasons for starting a personal training business. Fitness trainers are mainly individuals who enjoy teaching fitness, owning their own business, and scheduling appointments whenever it is convenient to them.

1. Treat personal fitness training as a real business – Most personal trainers just focus on the education of exercise physiology. This is where a typical personal trainer makes a huge mistake. My recommendation is to not be a one dimensional personal trainer, but to invest a considerable amount of time on personal training business courses. Remember, it is the business, sales, and marketing wisdom that will bring new clients through the door, not specifically your physiology, or nutrition smarts.

Treat your personal training business as a real business. It is not just something temporary until you find a new job. It is a real income producing business opportunity that can easily yield you well over $100,000 year in and year out. A real personal trainer business means you must have a business plan, and be willing to investing in sales, and marketing continuing education.

2. Invest in personal trainer courses to continue your education. Since you are running a professional personal training business it is important to say on top of the latest research, and techniques which will help your clients. They pay for your expertise to help them. As mentioned above, I also recommend investing in the educational material regarding business, sales, and the marketing of a fitness business.

3. Be professional. Since you are going to be commanding fees equivalent to that of other health care providers, it is important for you to conduct your personal fitness training business with total professionalism. You must show the client excellent value for their investment. Clients don’t want to pay someone top dollar when they act in an unprofessional manner. Being professional also means having a personal trainer certification to back you.

4. Be a good listener. You should also listen more than you speak when consulting with your personal training business clients. Fitness training clients want to be understood, and listened to. The more you listen to them, the more they will rely on your services, and the more they will tell their friends about you.

5. Don’t have the cheapest personal training rates on the block. It is a fact that if your rates are higher, the clients perceived value of you is better. With that said, when starting a personal training business you should not have the cheapest rates around. People generally feel they get what they pay for. By elevating your clients perceived value of yourself, and your fitness business, they will not complain of higher rates. You should always portray a higher perceived value in relation to your personal training session price.

6. Be a leader. Professional personal fitness trainers have to be leaders. You should not waffle, or look confused when training a client. Instead, act confident, and well in command as you look after your fitness training clients best interests.

7. Always be networking. Everyone that is within 5 feet of you should know about your personal training business. The more people you tell, the more money you will make. It is that simple!

8. Carve out your own niche. Don’t be a jack of all trades. Pick a segment of the personal trainer market, and specialize in it. Whether it be the post rehab market, the baby boomer population, or pregnant women, make sure you are known as the guru for a particular segment of the personal training market.

Why Men and Women Avoid Personal Training With the Opposite Sex

All fitness centers are a place for many types of gym goers, this does not include bodybuilding gyms and women’s only fitness centers. All fitness centers provide personal training. There has always been some separation with male and female personal trainers. The big question here is why males and females avoid personal training with the opposite sex?

From a female personal trainer perspective, I see this male and female personal trainer avoidance quite often. First, most personal trainers are willing to work with anyone and everyone. Some may prefer older adults, men, women, children, or just athletes. In my own personal experience some older women tend to avoid male personal trainers because they feel as though they are only into body building which reduces the chances of training with a male trainer. Some women think male trainers are the “Arrogant” type. A good majority of women only want to train with female trainers because they are uncomfortable with training with men. Most women are seeking trainers that are understanding and knowledgeable. Some look for trainers that specialize in certain aspect of training such as weight-loss, corrective exercise, strength training, and do not have a preference in male or female.

The other day I encountered a gym goer while training some clients. Lets call her “Connie.” She spoke with some of my clients both male and female. She asked them about my ability as a personal trainer as well as my personality. My clients then discussed my training methods and personality. When I walked over and introduced myself she said she has been looking for a personal trainer for a while now and that I seemed like the type of trainer she wanted to work with. Of course I had to ask her why. Hearing some frustration in her voice stated she felt intimidated by the male Personal Trainers that she has seen in this particular fitness center. She needed to be trained by someone more “like her”, meaning a female personal trainer.

On very rare occasions men have come to me seeking advice on reaching goals. Granted I am always willing to assist anyone with any questions fitness related whether they are male, female, young, and old. I have had men deliberately avoid me like the plague at the gym even though they have seen me training for several months. Do the letters on the back of my uniform not state “Personal Trainer”? Am I intimidating? Do you think my years of experience and knowledge are inadequate? Am I not strong enough to spot you? “Do you think you will offend me while speaking to me?”

A few years ago while at the gym with my husband. I was spotting him on his last set on the bench press. There was a guy on the chest press clearly needing some assistance. He waited until my husband was finished and walked right past me without a word and asked my husband for a spot. I was disappointed. I may not be 6 foot and weighing in at 200lbs but I can clearly spot a grown man lifting over 200lbs. I was deliberately ignored. The question is why? Is it a testosterone thing? Do you not feel comfortable asking a female personal trainer for assistance? Is it the male ego?

According to an anonymous source I successfully received some answers to my previous questions. Most men prefer train with male personal trainers because of body type or physique. Training with another male that is fit, or “in shape” will ultimately result in the same fitness results. Many men believe female trainers are not knowledgeable or have no way to relate to them. Others see female trainers as a distraction, may have an attitude, or bad personality. Some men could care less as long as their fitness goals are met. In some cases men prefer a female trainer because training with a male personal trainer makes them feel out of shape. There is definitely a pattern with both sides. Everyone wants personal training with someone they can relate to whether it is a male or female trainer. The choice is ultimately up to you
